BDI ADVOCACY

Bobby Dodd Institute's mission is to empower people to maximize their potential by securing economic self-sufficiency, independence and integration into society. Full participation in society extends beyond a paycheck, though. We want to encourage all of our clients and stakeholders to be informed and involved in their communities. To that end, we launched a full-scale voter registration and voter turnout campaign during the 2004 and 2006 elections. Our pre-election research showed that less than half of those among Bobby Dodd Institute's universe of people with disabilities, families, and other disability stakeholders were actually registered to vote. We were able to increase the registration rate among our population to 52.8 percent and more significantly, we were able to increase voter turnout to 75.8 percent. This data shows that people with disabilities, families, and advocates can and will rally around issues of importance, particularly those dealing with quality of life and employment opportunities. At Bobby Dodd Institute, we intend to build on this momentum by encouraging good voting habits and proactively building relationships in the right places. The Javits-Wagner-O'Day (JWOD) Congressional Champion Program has given us a visible platform to build meaningful working relationships with Georgia's elected officials on both sides of the aisle. To date, the following sitting officials have been inducted into the program: Rep. David Scott (D-13th), Rep. John Lewis (D-5th), and Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-11th), Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-8th), Rep. John Linder (R-7th), Rep. Tom Price (R-6th), and Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R), and Sen. Johnny Isakson (R). Georgia is one of only six states that have both sitting U.S. senators as program champions. By growing a strong network among the state's decision makers, we hope to influence the policy that affects those we serve.
"I've seen the results produced by organizations like BDI. I've seen tears of frustration turn to smiles of accomplishment because someone cared enough to give people with disabilities a chance."
